Biography
About
Víctor Cavieres “SONO” (1985) is a distinctive voice in contemporary Chilean art, masterfully fusing artistic expression with social reality. Hailing from Rancagua, his unique style was forged during adolescence in mural art, where he pioneered the combination of spray, brush, and stencil, tackling original and unusual themes for the time. His singular perspective was shaped by the advent of cable television, the internet, and video games during the 1990s, which intensified a persistent feeling of not fitting in, fueling a profound expressive quest.
SONO’s work is an immersion into human emotions, particularly as mediated and linked by technology within nature and urban contexts. These are themes he addresses with profound authenticity, alongside his focus on mental health, resonating deeply with his own story.
Consolidating his position as a key figure in the new Chilean art scene, SONO stands out for his innovative approach and his ability to transmute experiences into impactful visual pieces. His art is an intimate and necessary dialogue, reaffirming the transformative power of visual expression as an agent of change and social understanding.

Statement
Growing up in Chile during the transformative 1990s in a middle-class context provided a crucial window into global culture through the nascent internet, video games and diverse cable television programming. This early exposure profoundly shaped my artistic vision, fostering an awareness of varied perspectives and realities beyond my immediate surroundings.
My canvases become portraits of the imagined – individuals who, much like myself, carry the quiet weight of feeling like outsiders. They are figures imbued with unique inner landscapes, distinct abilities, and singular ways of navigating the world, often grappling with the complexities of understanding, accepting, and forging connections with others.
My painting process mirrors the fragmented and layered nature of these experiences, akin to a rapid channel shift. Discrete layers of information – emotions, thoughts, and external influences – momentarily coalesce, offering glimpses into the rich and often unseen inner worlds of these individuals. Through bold color palettes, fractured forms reminiscent of a digital age, and a dynamic interplay of textures, I aim to visually articulate the multifaceted nature of identity and the subtle nuances of human connection (or disconnection) within both natural and increasingly digitized urban contexts.
Through my work, I invite viewers to pause and engage with the intricate layers of human experience, particularly those perspectives that might feel marginalized or unseen. It’s about recognizing shared vulnerabilities and celebrating our diverse ways of navigating this technologically intertwined era. My role is to offer a point of resonance, fostering a more empathetic understanding of ourselves and each other within our complex, evolving reality.
